Update of bug #21714 (project wget):

                Severity:               2 - Minor => 3 - Normal
                Priority:                 3 - Low => 5 - Normal

Follow-up Comment #2:

This has been a problem for several users. It kind of sucks that there's no
workaround.

Perhaps, if it gets a "filename too long" error, it could automatically
truncate the path and try again? Or possibly add a 'cut out the query string
from paths'-type deal. Both would require -k to be useful, though, it seems to
me.
